Power Skiving
This type of tool can be used on dedicated skiving machines and modern 5 axis machining centres.
Tools are now able to be manufactured from more hard-wearing materials such as MC90 and Carbide.
A full regrinding service is available for all skiving tools, including normal helical sharpening and lip and chamfer helical sharpening. Also available is a precision edge preparation and full recoating service.
Our capabilities include the manufacture of these types of power skiving tools:
Dathan power skiving tools can be designed and produced for cutting any type of gear – internal or external, spur or helical.
They can also be designed to cut splines, serrations, sprockets or other involute forms. The cutters are full form generated using the Dathan ‘pass thro’ method.
These cutters may be manufactured with bore diameters from 10mm to 120mm or 0.5″ up to 4″ and cutter diameters (pitch circle diameter) from 19mm (.75″) to 350mm (13.75″).
These are primarily designed for cutting internal gears, splines and serrations, both spur and helical. But they may also be designed for externals, if required.
Shank type are full form generated however small the pitch circle diameter (PCD), although the strength of the cutter produced is the limiting factor.
The strength and rigidity of shank type cutters is greatly improved by the Dathan ribbing method and is especially advised for those of small PCD.
The extended back boss type cutter is designed to avoid the problems associated with obstructions on the work piece preventing full working movement.
This type of tool has the advantage that the clamping nut does not project below the cutting face. This is necessary where interference by web flange or fixture on the workpiece would prevent the use of a disc cutter.
Tooth Shapes
Helical gear shaper cutters are mainly manufactured to customers specific requirements, especially in the form of single helical cutters, which are extensively used in the manufacture of automotive gear boxes.
Single helical gear shaper cutters may also be designed for use in a thread or worm generating machine for the production of single or multi-start worms. These are usually cone sharpened.
Double helical cutters are used in matched pairs and are sharpened with their cutting edges ground parallel to the axis. These tools are used for cutting continuous double helical gears, which are used in the transmission of high loads in gear pumps and similar applications.
